Iv'e liked trains ever since I saw the freight trains from River Veiw Park in Jersey City Heights in 1967.I was about four years old at the time. The trains were on Penn Central's river line. When I would go down to Hoboken I would see the mixture of old and new passenger equipment in the Erie-Lackawanna yards. We used to go to the Jersey Shore to visit my fathers freinds. On the way there we would pass the Lehigh Valley trains at Oak Island Yard. When we crossed the Pulaski Skyway there would be Penn Central electric freight trains along side us.
We later moved to Manasquan NJ in 1970.The New York & Long Branch Railroad tracks were five houses away.I had a great veiw of Penn Central and Central Railroad Company of New Jersey Commuter Trains. The Penn Central trains had Streamlined E-8 locomotives. The CNJ had Blue and yellow freight locomotives called GP40-P Locomotives.Penn Central had Ex-Santa Fe coaches and some old Pennsylvania RR P-70 coaches. They also had a handful of Ex-New York Central Tavern Lounge Cars. The CNJ had colorful Ex-Great Northern cars.
They also had about seven old Kansas City Southern cars that they always kept coupled together. There were some cool private cars on some trains too.Occasionaly A Red Baron GP-7 or a navy blue GP-7 would pair up with one of the GP-40's.
There was a freight train pulled by an alco RS-3 called the Bay Head Turner that would sometimes visit. In the 1980's another fleet of E-8's was purchased from Illonois Central Gulf and Southern Railway. We even had some former Conrail E-8's on this line.I went to see the GG-1's in South Amboy every chance I could. They lasted until 1983.The E-8's lasted until 1987.
On September13,1987 I rode the Farewell to the E-8 trip from Hoboken NJ to Bay Head NJ.In 1987 I went to Aurora Illinois to see the Burlington Northern E-8's in action. In 1991 I went to the NRHS Convention in Huntington West Virginia. There was some amazing steam trips to ride.Baltimore Maryland had some E-8's running to Camden Yards so I went to see them.
I also went to Croton on the Hudson to see the awesome FL-9's in action.I go to Altoona Pennsylvania a few times a year, I really love the Pittsburg Line. Thanks for looking ,enjoy the pictures!
